Granny Smith apples are bright green and famous for their crisp, tart flavour. Their firm, crunchy and juicy flesh makes them ideal for eating raw, cooking or adding to salads, as they brown very slowly when exposed to air. Low in sugar and rich in antioxidants, it is also an excellent source of fibre and potassium, contributing to satiety and healthy digestion. Discovered in Australia in 1868 by Maria Ann Smith, this apple is now one of the most widely grown in the world.
